Baldur, A Symbol of Your Heaven and Earth

Baldur is temperance

The story of Baldur is quite dramatic. He is a symbol of broadmindedness. His name means Broad. He is also a symbol of summer. The story of him ending up in the underworld with Hella is two fold. It signifies the changing of the seasons from summer to winter. It also means that Ignorance has taken hold temporarily. Baldur (Broadmindedness) is accidentally killed by his brother, Hoth (Hypocrisy). Any attempt to retrieve Baldur fails, however, Baldur is restored in the new world called Gimle (Fire shelter). Temperance speaks of blending two elements together to create something new. In the vision quest, Temperance speaks of merging with the Divine to expel all fear. The Seeker only has to face their own darkness (devil) after they have received Spiritual Union. Thus, they are strong enough to overcome it. Baldur is restored in Gimle after Loki’s vision quest, which is Ragnarok. It is  Loki that tricks Hoth to kill Baldur and it is Loki’s vision quest that restores Baldur. Norse myths speaks in metaphors. They are all the same being. Loki kills Baldur, his own positive traits, due to his hypocrisy. Baldur ends up in Hella, which is a cold place. He is there in a frozen state. This speaks of the emotional state we end up with if we don’t deal with our own fears, doubts, and disbelief. When Loki goes on the vision quest, it burns the whole world up. Loki is Saturn, and Saturn is the World tarot card. His whole mind is transformed and he is no longer trapped emotionally. I have written about how Loki is Yggdrasil. You can read that here.

Temperance is your good traits. Temperance is when you have balance and you are broad-minded. This card is your heaven on earth. But there might be a snake in your garden. The card remains a positive as long as you don’t fall on your own hypocrisy. It speaks of taking a higher approach (broad-mindedness) in your life, everything that Baldur represents. You can learn more about Baldur and his journey in my article called, Rindr, a misunderstood Norse goddess.
