Who is Rindr ~ A Misunderstood Norse Goddess

This old norse story speaks of the turning of the seasons, but it also has a spiritual meaning. I talk about the spiritual meaning in this video here: https://youtu.be/Boqu7b9mh-E

To understand Rindr, we must interpret the story where she is an active element, namely the story of how Höðr killed Baldur.

Baldur, the god of light and purity, was beloved by all the gods and goddesses. He was known for his beauty, kindness, and wisdom, and was considered the most handsome and beloved of all the gods. Baldur’s name means Broadmindedness. He is the son of Odin and Frigg. Baldur is also a symbol of summer. This is obvious when we translate the names of his wife Nanna (blossom) and daughter Nip (bud). Baldur’s hall is Breidablik. Breidablik means Broad vision.

Höðr is Baldur’s brother and he is the god of darkness as he is blind and his name means hypocrisy. Höðr was tricked by Loki, the god of mischief, into killing Baldur with a mistletoe arrow. Mistletoe was the only thing deemed too harmless to swear an oath to Frigga not to hurt Baldur.

Baldur’s death plunged the world into darkness and grief, and the gods mourned his loss deeply. Baldur descent into the underworld is a symbol of the end of summer.

Odin could not himself avenge Baldur, because Höðr is also his son. In Volupspa, Odin summons his Fate Goddess and she tells him everything that has happened and everything that will happen. Odin already knows what will happen to Baldur. His fate goddess tells him that the only one that will avenge Baldur is a son with the Goddess Rindr. His name will be Vali and when he is one day old, he will send Höðr into the underworld.

Odin travels to Rindr who rejects him twice. Odin uses Rune magic to lay with Rindr and they have Vali. Vali fulfils his prophecy and sends hypocrisy into the underworld.

Rindr used to be written as Vrindr meaning Turning. She represents the Turning of the Seasons. The story of Rindr was written in the old danish book, Gesta Danorum, written by Saxo Grammaticus in Latin. Rinda is latin for sequences. This is likely how Vrindr became Rindr. Vali means Chosen, he is the chosen day of the new season.

The meaning of this story is complex. It speaks of turning of the seasons from Summer to Winter to Summer again. The Runes speaks of natural laws operating in nature as the seasons turn, such as Law of Time. This story also speaks of the Law of Truth and how Truth cannot be suppressed forever. Hypocrisy eventually falls and Vali is Baldur reborn again. Truth always wins in the end.
